The Dachstein / Salzkammergut area provides a balance between sporting activities, cultural pursuits, rest and relaxation.
Haus Mirabelle works with local extreme sports company, Outdoor Leadership to offer a number of activities; canoeing, climbing, natural ropes and the Krippenstein Safari.
You can enjoy a variety of activities from hiking in the mountains, the annual mountain biking rally in July and the music and café culture of Bad Ischl and Salzburg. Most people value the peace and tremendous natural beauty of the countryside and the opportunity to get fit/relax in these surroundings. There are cable car trips to be taken, the famous Café Zauner of Bad Ischl - the confectioner to the Kaiser and spas to be enjoyed.
Bad Ischl was the Summer residence of the Kaiser Franz Joseph and where he took his young Emperess to woo her - such is the natural beauty and romance of the region. This famous spa town boasts a good theatre, museums, concert halls, restaurants and café. In Austrian and German culture, the surrounding lakes of Wolfgang See occupy a special place in literature and music and are short drive away by car offering water sports and bathing.
If you want to up the ante, Salzburg is only 1 hour away and in July hosts the famous 'Salzburger Festspiele' - the opera and music festival.
The Salzkammergut Mountain biking Trophy
Due to the scenic and mountainous countryside, Salzkammergut is famous mountain biking terrain. The Salzkammergut mountain biking Trophy will take place on 17th July 2010, and the Junior Trophy the day after. Mountains bike can be rented in Bad Goisern, and there is ample garage space to store and repair your bike.
European cradle of fly fishing
The River Traun (which runs through Bad Goisern) has helped to put Austria on the international fly fishing map. Charles Ritz fished at the River Traun, as did Hemingway and many other well known fishers. You can fish with a permit at a number of local spots, and there is also fishing at the famous Lake Hallstatt – the season is from 1st May to 31st October.
Adventure sports
Salzkammergut and the surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor pursuits and adventure sports from climbing and abseiling to rafting and paragliding. There is a specialist tour operator, Outdoor-Leadership based in Bad Goisern which can help arrange your excursions.
Austrian Lake District & swimming in natural lakes
Haus Mirabelle is ca. 30 minutes drive from the famous Austrian Lake District, where you can find lakes such as the Wolfgang See. You can try your hand at sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding or just taking in the scenery at the famous terrace at the Hotel Weisses Roessl. Closer to home, you can enjoy swimming in the warm natural lakes at Gosau , Lake Hallstatt or even the Naturists' Beach!
Hiking & Nordic Walking
Haus Mirabelle is surrounded by famous hiking paths and we can provide you with suggestions of itineraries which you might like to take or even hire a local guide and join a group. There are many mountain refuges en route where you can stop for a delicious local lunch or apple strudel!
Salzburg Music festival
Every year, the city of Salzburg hosts a classical music and drama festival, attracting many world class orchestras and conductors. Next year the Whitson Festspiele will run from 21st - 24th May 2010. The ‘Salzburger Festspiele’ are regularly booked out in advance and tickets are highly sought after.
